I've read several posts and done some Googling, but I'm still unclear as to a good way to create a website that has multiple language options.

  1. Can someone give me at least a high-level explanation of what enabling a language pack actually does?
  2. How can one portal show different language content, if that is what happens?
  3. Do I provide content translation or does the language pack do that or do I need a 3rd party module to do it?

Thanks for any guidance.

1. Enabling a language (not language pack (!) does make this language selectable for the current portal (default language in portal settings and preferred language in user profile). If multiple languages are enabled for a site and the language selector is implemented in the skin (like in default Minimal Extasy skin), the language selector will show up. 2. install multiple languages and disable per site, which languages are not supported 3. language packs provide translations for the static elements of the core and modules (depending on the scope of the LP). To provide content localisation for ML sites, you need to install 3rd party modules for content, as well as a module for page localization to get your custom menu items localized.
