OK.  I am trying to get a handle on a DNN installation at my company that was set up long ago by someone long gone now.  I'm assuming it is the Community version.  I have managed to get established as an Admin User and can get in to see editing framework, etc.

Questions:

  1. How can I find out which version is currently running?  Once I do, how can I safely upgrade to the latest version without destroying the current content?
  2. I do have an IT Support firm to turn to in terms of getting to server locations and helping to make sure all requirements are there, etc.
  3. Once I am straight, is there sufficient documentation in the Online Help system to deal with changing stylesheets, backgrounds, etc.?
  4. Should I be trying to do this myself at all?  I am relatively intelligent and once built a website or two using FrontPage.  It doesn't look like it will kill me if I just leave the initial framework someone established a while back and just try to bring the information up to ddate or add some here and there.  Is that a fair assumption?

When you login do you see a HOST menu or just an ADMIN menu? Under either the HOST or ADMIN menu do you see an Extensions page? If so, that page will tell you what version you are on. If you don't see that option you are on DNN 4.9.5 or earlier. If that is the case you will need to have a HOST or SUPERUSER login to see what version of DNN the site is running on.

1. if you login as superuser ("host" by default), the DotNetNuke version is stated on top of the Host Settings page. 2. sorry, what is the question here? 3. to alter the look of your web site, you need to modify exsiting skin or apply a new one. there is a skinning guide and there are thousands of skins for sale on Snowcovered.com. 4. if you are firm with Frontpage, you may like to use Artisteer (www.artisteer) to create a customized skin for your site yourself. if you are firm with server adminsitration, you may maintain IIS web site and DNN upgrades yourself as well, otherwise it might be better to pay a DNN consultant to support you.
