Maybe a basic question but where do I find the skin used on this site?

I believe it's the default skin when you install DNN5.

I did too, which is why I'm scratching my head here. I don't see any default skins in the extensions manager other than blue or gray. I think what I'll probably do is build a new skin based on the default ones I do have as it looks like the same basic thing. DNN just did some nice graphical elements on the one used here on this site.

If that's the case you are using an ancient DNN version, if you upgrade you will get the newer skin.
