I have Windows Server 2008 64bit with SQL Server 2008 Express edition. I have given full rights to Network Services account  to the folder.

However I receive error: Access to the path \Website\Portals\_default\Logs\LogFailures.xml.resources is denied. The Windows User Account listed below must have Read/Write Priviledge to this path. (no user accounts listed here so don't know what user account the DNN means)

Wha could be wrong?

DotNetNuke means the identity you specified in the app pool. By default this is  "Network Service"

You might want to check a couple of things:

  • is your application pool identity indeed  "Network Service", or is it another account
  • did you give your app pool identity modify rights on the DNN application root folder and everything below
  • Are any of the files you have trouble writing to readonly?
  • do you have a virus scanner running? Virus scanners can lock files on your server, and should be used with care

I've seen this a LOT when testing and not watching root folder permissions....

Erik is bang on asking about DefaultAppPool service and your root folder permissions.

If you're running Window 2008 R2 it runs IIS 7 which uses DefaultAppPool running under ApplicationPoolIdentity by default.

You can change this in the IIS Manager if you wish.

Whatever Identity your IIS AppPool is using you MUST grant Modify permissions for the same account on your root folder and your SQL instance.

The error you are encountering is because you have a permissions mis-match between IIS and your root folder.
