Is it possible to make a parent DNN site a child of a new parent?  The domain name of the current parent will be the domain name of the new parent and the current parent (new child) will be a subdomain (abc.domain.com). Half of the site will stay on the new parent and the other half goes to the new child.

Thanks.

Yes and No.

In theory the differentiation between child and parent only has any meaning when dealing with the portal alias.

So

www.mydomain.com is a parent

www.mydomain.com/child is a child

so I can add a second alias to www.mydomain.com/child called www.mydomain2.com

and I can add a second alias to www.mydomain.com called wwww.mydomain2.com/child2

but that is the only difference between a "parent" and "child"

There are a couple of caveats.

  • If you add a child alias after the portal has been created you have to manually create the subfolder (eg child2 folder) and copy the required Default.aspx file manually.
  • some image and file references may be broken if you remove the original alias

Charles is correct (obviously) but I just wanted to add one more thing - when turning a 'parent' portal into a child portal, you must create a directory in the web root of the DNN install matching the child name, and you have to copy in the /default.aspx file.  But please note - this is *not* the same default.aspx file you find in the DNN web root folder.  It's a special /default.aspx file that is created for child portals.

If you don't have a copy of this file, create another child portal in your installation, and copy the file out of there.  And don't forget to make sure the file/folder permissions on your newly created child portal folder are correct.
