I've been looking at options for an alternative search solution for our intranet and have been having a look at Search Server Express. Seems to be quite a good product, but I don't seem to be able to get it to index our intranet.

We're using the AD auth provider and I expected that providing valid credentials for the account used to access the portal would work but don't.

Has anyone tried and succeeded in getting search server to index a site protected with AD auth?

Cheers Wayne

DNN content is stored in the database. To get it included in Search server index, you will need a proper search indexing provider. Unfortunately, I am not aware of such a component existing.

Serach Server Express indexes files, it won't crawl a site and won't index the data in the DNN database.

This is not quite accurate.  I have Search Server Express indexing 3 DNN websites, my sharepoint intranet, and several file shares.  In your Shared Search Provider, you can set Search Server to index websites, file shares, and other Sharepoint sites.

The catch is that you must use the forms login to do the search (I haven't done this, I ony index public content) and it does not respect user permissions - because it does not know how to respect user permissions for a DNN site.  This is why I don't have it indexing my extranet - the permissions are very important to individuals.  So, if you can live with that limitation - or you want to make it available with the lowest permissions - it will work.  Again, I haven't used Search Server in this way, so I'm not the best person to give advice.

Thanks for the responses.

Yeah, I can get it to index public facing content quite easily with the test instances I've setup. Will have a look if I can get it to work with the forms authentication, although I suspect the auto-login we've got setup with AD auth may be a problem.

I'm also having a look at google-mini but think I'm going to run into the same problem. The Xerpient Open-SearchEngine might be our best bet for an improved search experience - as I understand it's going to be part of a future DNN PE release.

If I have any luck getting it to work with AD auth, will post here for anyone else wanting to do the same.

Cheers Wayne
