All all...

I'm a bit a of newb when comes to DNN so I thought this would be the best place to start.  I currently do design work on the side, and like many most of my customers do not know much about design, leaving me to do pretty much all the work.  Obviously this has it perks, but basically I would like to start using a CMS plateform so that I can allow my customers to make changes without me.  I currently do not offer hosting services but I'd to change that and from what I've read on this site DNN is a great plateform to use.  I'm looking for a hosting provider that offers Resellering and DNN, but just broswing through Google its pretty overwhelming.

Since I'm new to DNN, I'm not excatly sure the type of questions I should be asking the hosting providers, but I've listed a few here for this post, however please feel free to suggest any questions I should be asking.

I understand I have to use SQL Server, but do I need 1 for every DNN site I setup, or can they all share the one instance.
Is it safe to assume that most DNN host use the Professional version or better or could some just offer the community version.
Will most hosting providers allow me to install/upload custom modules that I might purchase.

My goal is to be able to sign up my customers and simply provide them with a baisc DNN template, provide instructions on how to use it and walk away, not completely of course, or I can maintain the site for them, at cost.

Since I'm looking to DNN, pretty much conclusively, I image I need a provider that has a lot of experince in DNN, (or does the providers that simply use the one click installs work just as good)?
Option to upload/install 3rd party modules.
Since this is a start up, the cost will need to be farily low, (not these $50 plus packages), but allow me to move into a larger plan as I go.
I would like anonymity, but its not an absolute requirement.
Decent amout of disk space, 2Gb or better, per site.

I've already looked at several:

SeekdotNet -  Seems a bit pricey, but worse only get 5 SQL DBs with a plan that host 10 sites.  If my early statement is correct, that I need SQL DB for each DNN installation, I'd only be able setup 5 sites using DNN.

ResellerChoice - Good start up pricing but lacking on space, and only 1 SQL DB

3Essentials - Appears you have to use there expensive plan for Windows, and doesn't say how many SQL DB you get

HostGator - Appears you hve to use dedicated server package, to pricey for my start up

m6.net - Seems like a decent option, but haven't really seen much feedback on them.

I really appriciate any thoughts or feeback.

Thanks,
Bob

Bob,

I would recommend that you consider a single DNN instances per customer.  The issues associated with one customer are then issolated.  Consider if you do have several customers in one instance of DNN, and that customer wants (for what ever reason) to move to another provider.  The effort to "cut" the customer out of the single instance in significant.  Similarly, if one customer becomes larger than originally expected, then other may suffer while you attempt to support the single customer.

So you may want to look for a hosting company that will give you a discount on the number of customers you create on their site.  Or go all out and get a dedicated server and host it all.  Your costs are basically set, and you can have as many instances of DNN as you see fit.

Most hosting companies will provide the Community Version of DNN as the Professional version is not really meant for a shared hosting environment.  The professional version is the core version with a few additional PLUS DotNetNuke Support.  The few additions are not really needed by simple users of DNN.  The real issue with the Professional Version is DotNetNuke support -- who gets the support ... the hoster, you, or your customers.  Also, who will pay the yearly fee?  However, you can certainly resell the Profession Version, however you will have to enter into sales agreement with DNN.

Lastly, I would suggest you spend some time working with DNN before attempting the reselling.  The better you understand DNN, the better a service you will provide.

Hope this helps,
Paul.

Thanks Paul.. That makes sense, I will go the route of one host per DNN instance.  Also since my post I did continue to research and found out that all the ones I was looking at use the Community version and after watching some of the webniars and installing the Community version I can see the difference, which doesn't make since for me to go the Professional route.

I'd still like to get any feedback or suggestion on Reseller Host...

Thanks..
Bob

Hi Bob,

We are about to launch an innovative DNN hosting service based on cloud hosting. The service will feature a "developer formula" to  easily create websites for clients. The objective is for you to be able to focus only on developing the website, without worrying about installing DNN, managing the hosting service, handling technical support and billing, etc.

Here is a brief overview of how it works:

1) creation of a DNN installation for website development
Using our intuitive interface, a few clicks enable you to create a new empty DNN installation to develop the new website. As a developer, you do not have to install or configure the necessary infrastructure to host DNN. The new installation ia accessible from a temporary domain, such as "<clientname> .web1.use.d-alias.com".

2) website development
By connecting to the temporary url, you can start developing the website. This url can be sent to your clients for them to validate and approve the website during development.

3) website publishing
Once the website is completed and approved by the client, you can launch the publishing process. The client will be invited to complete his profile and activate his hosting account. All of this, without having to know how to deploy DNN to a hosting provider and without having to manage billing.

4) hosting management
Once the website is published, we manage hosting as well as billing, directly with the client. In addition, the revenue sharing is calculated on each invoice and deposited to your developer account. You can, at any time, request a payment of the income generated by the revenue sharing,

----

The service is not yet publicly available, but if you are interested, I can send you a special invitation to preview the service and a link to the full developer guide explaining in detail how this works and how to get started. It is really easy to use and really powerful.

We have one local graphics designer that is now happier than ever by using DNN and our developer formula: she loves design, loves working with clients to analyze projects, but hates HTML and CSS coding and has no programming skills, and wants to provide full featured websites to her clients, by herself. This is how she works now:

- she does graphics design and structure / content analysis with the client
- when the design is approved, she uses a PSD -> DNN service -- she doesn't have to do any HTML / CSS
- she creates a new website in a few clicks using our developer formula, installs the skin, creates pages and integrates content
- she uses the built-in functionalities and buys 3rd party extensions, such as slideshows -- fully featured websites, not a line of programming
- once the website is approved by the client, she publishes the website to the client
- from this point, she has nothing more to do -- the client activates his hosting account with us, we manage billing and technical support with the client, she gets revenue sharing from the hosting and moves on to another project

Send us an email at sales@premiumdnn.com if you are interested and we will send you more details.

Best,

Etienne

Thanks Etienne, I would like more information, I'll drop you an email..

Also after conintue to research I found a couple of hosting providers that indicate they offer unlimited SQL SRV DBs.  That seems a bit fishy to me considering most charge or only allow a certain amount and then charge for more.  I've emailed for more information but wanted to get some feedback here as well.  If they are offer unlimited DBs could that be like sub instances, and if thats even possible, could you or would you want to use that for DNN?  Also I believe at least one of them indicated they were SQL 2005, The latest DNN will work with SQL 2005, right?

Still looking forward to hearing any suggested Reseller Host out there..

Thanks,
Bob
