Is there anything special I have to do to upgrade? Do I need to do incremental upgrades first? ie upgrade to 5.0.. then 5.1.. etc...

Any advice appreciated, thank you.

Hi Harlequin

I think that for a 4.95 site the best option is to go directly to 5.4.1
At least one of the interim versions introduces issues that either need to be fixed or require a roll back.
Several people who had issues (such as me) going from some version 5 releases to 5.4.1 report that 4.95 - 5.41 works.

I have read that the xml module can cause issues and is best updated first or removed.
If you have a lot of third party modules installed it pays to check the developers sites and make sure your instances are 5.4 compatible.

I am sure you know this but it never hurts to also say - back up your site and its database before updating DNN.

 Hope this helps

 Ian

Thank you so much for the info. I am assuming I should use the new web.config in the new 5.4 and transfer my mssql info into that, plug that into my wwwroot folder then install the upgrade? Or keep using my old .config for the upgrade?

Hi

When upgrading (since 4.6) you do not need to do anything to your webconfig. The upgrade scripts merge the old and new.
I have never had this fail to work.
To upgrade DNN you simply unzip the new files and drop onto the old.
If you are able it is also a good idea to stop IIS but don't worry if you cannot.

Good luck

Ian
