I have an external website where members can log in to access member only areas. The site is built in ColdFusion using a SQL 2005 database.  Is there a way to pass the log in and authorize in the DNN community site so that users are recognized when they access the DNN site without having to log in again?

If you want to use an existing authentication scheme, I think you will have to write your own authentication provider. Otherwise, you could import the users accounts into DNN using one of several third party modules that do such things, but that won't keep the two user databases in sync or updated.
