I tend to have multiple domain names for a given website to cover mis-spellings and TLDs.  Also, I want people to be able to hit the sites even if they omit "www".  So, my aliases tend to look like this:

mysite.com
www.mysite.com
mysite.net
www.mysite.net
misite.com
www.misite.com
etc.

Needless to say, the alias list begins to look pretty wolly in a hurry.  I had read on John Mitchell's blog that wildcards were supported:
http://blogs.snapsis.com/PermaLink,gu...

However, I am unable to find any other information on this.  It seems from his blog that one could do this:

*.mysite.com
*.mysite.net
*.misite.com

This seems much more tidy, IMHO.  However, I don't know if this is a feature that came and went, but when I try to do this, the UI proclaims "invalid alias".

So... is this in fact supported?  What is the syntax if so?  Also, would I have to declare mysite.com and *.mysite.com in order to allow "www" to be omitted, or would just the one line above take care of it?

Cheers,
Tim

Tim, for SEO reasons, you should try to redirect all other domains to a single domain, you are propagating - either including www or not, as you like. If your DNN installation contains a single domain, you only need to make sure, all domain addresses are routed to the IIS website and DNN will load default portal. Otherwise you may setup a second IIS website, redirecting to the desired main address.

Hadn't thought of the SEO angle - good point.

So, you are saying that I should forward all domains to a single "main" domain (for each website portal), and then only define that one within DNN?

I do have multiple portals in my DNN installation.

I also recommend choosing one domain combination (whether with / without www) and stick to it.  It's ok to use the other domains, but you absolutely want to 301 redirect all requests for all the other domains into a single domain per portal.  That will stop duplicate content from spreading on search engines.

I wouldn't worry too much about having a lot of aliases in the portal alias table.  It's no big deal.

To cover off your last point, to my knowledge DNN doesn't support a wildcard portal alias, but I'm happy to be shown otherwise.

I've tried several methods to achieve similar but IE always displays the domain name that is typed by the user.

What is the best way to get to www.mysite.com even if the user type www.mysite.net and still have www.mysite.com in the address bar?

Thanks,
Paul
