I wasn't using the source code.  Anyway, there was a mismatch between actual and specified telerik versions.  What worked for me was changing the Telerik.Web.UI new version to newVersion="2010.01.309.35" in the WebConfig file.  I am not sure if this is the right version for Telerik with DNN 5.4.2, I think it was the one with DNN 5.4.1, but so far it works.

magare, if you are using source code version, you need to copy telerik dll from /library/components/telerik/bin

What does this mean?  Can you be more specific?  I used the "upgrade" package to upgrade from 5.1.2 to 5.4.2 and I get the exact same message.  So I need to copy what, exactly, from where, EXACTLY, to where, EXACTLY?  I know nothing about any of this, except to know that using an old version is just asking for some malicious fool to hack me.  Please help!  Assume I know nothing, and you'll be right!!

Thx!

Ok, a fancy new editor would be a great thing, but right now all I want is to get rid of that annoying server error -- how do I get rid of ALL the Telerik stuff so it just uses the FCKeditor as it has been doing? (circa version 5.1.2)  I see I could change "<htmlEditor defaultProvider="TelerikEditorProvider">" to its old setting of "<htmlEditor defaultProvider="FckHtmlEditorProvider">" but is that the only change I need to make, to get rid of that ANNOYING server error and get my site back?

Thx,

Andria

How this problem could have made it through Q&A is beyond me, and why it hasn't been fixed in subsequent builds further mystifies me. Luckily though, the fix is relatively simple:
1. Make sure that you have the telerik DLL in your installations bin folder, if not you'll need to find it by downloading it from a source version.
2. Open up your web.config file, and change the telerik newVersion number to: <bindingRedirect oldVersion="2008.0.0.0-2020.0.0.0" newVersion="2010.01.309.35" />

Your website should come up then.

You can then change to using telerik as your html editor by changing the default html editor field, also in your web.config file.

Hope this helps.

Ok.

1)  What "telerik DLL"?  Where do I find it?  And do you mean the folder called "bin" directly off the dnn root folder?

2)  That is the exact oldVersion-newVersion line that already exists in the release.config which I found in the update download package.

I finally had to give up on 5.4.2; removing all instances of "telerik" from the web.config file didn't help.  then I noticed that the connection string is different; in the new version's release.config, the line looks like this:

<add name="SiteSqlServer" connectionString="Server=(local);Database=DotNetNuke;uid=;pwd=;" providerName="System.Data.SqlClient" />

whereas the web.config I'm currently using for 5.1.2, there is a line which refers to a wholly different file, "connectionstrings.config" -- so I have absolutely clue what to do about that.

I may just have to deal with 5.1.2, or maybe download the upgrade pkg for 5.1.4, because I'm not sure that my host supports the ASP.NET 3.51; I think it might be just 3.5.

But maybe I'm just stuck with this 5.1.2, because this is my VERY first excursion into MS servers, and I have no clue on earth what is going on with this thing-- it's sure nothing like the simplicity of Linux servers and applications, but I figured if I wanted to call myself a web designer I needed to have more than one trick up my sleeve. *sigh*

Thx,

Andria
