On our brand new DNN 5.4 website (www.MSOttawaCommunity.com) I'm unable to use the Events module.  It won't show up in the modules list to add, so I went looking in the Module Definitions list to see what's up with it.  When I click on the pencil, I get the big red X with "A critical error has occurred. Object reference not set to an instance of an object."

This is a brand new install, nothing was there before.  I've tried googling this but unfortunately haven't found anything applicable (most hits are with upgrades, this is a net new install).  Any help is greatly appreciated.

If you can post the error from the event log, you should be able to provide us more information.

Other than this, I would suggest that you may wish to use version 5.1.0 beta, which to be honest is pretty stable. Or you could wait a few days for 5.1.1 Release Candidate (which is 5.1.0 with 2 or 3 minor bug fixes). These have been re-worked for greater compatability with DNN 5.x. We have seen a few errors which we have not been able to identify related to installing versions 5.0.3 on DNN 5.4.x.

Cheers
Roger

Thank you Roger for replying. Here's what I foudn out. From the log, I'm seeing this stacktrace. Message: DotNetNuke.Services.Exceptions.PageLoadException: Object reference not set to an instance of an object. ---> System.NullReferenceException: Object reference not set to an instance of an object. at DotNetNuke.Services.Installer.Writers.ModulePackageWriter..ctor(PackageInfo package) at DotNetNuke.Services.Installer.Writers.PackageWriterFactory.GetWriter(PackageInfo package) at DotNetNuke.Modules.Admin.Extensions.EditExtension.BindData() in C:\inetpub\vhosts\msottawacommunity.com\httpdocs\DesktopModules\Admin\Extensions\EditExtension.ascx.vb:line 170 at DotNetNuke.Modules.Admin.Extensions.EditExtension.Page_Load(Object sender, EventArgs e) in C:\inetpub\vhosts\msottawacommunity.com\httpdocs\DesktopModules\Admin\Extensions\EditExtension.ascx.vb:line 221 at System.Web.UI.Control.OnLoad(EventArgs e) at System.Web.UI.Control.LoadRecursive() at System.Web.UI.Control.LoadRecursive() at System.Web.UI.Control.LoadRecursive() at System.Web.UI.Control.LoadRecursive() at System.Web.UI.Control.LoadRecursive() at System.Web.UI.Control.LoadRecursive() at System.Web.UI.Control.LoadRecursive() at System.Web.UI.Control.LoadRecursive() at System.Web.UI.Control.LoadRecursive() at System.Web.UI.Control.LoadRecursive() at System.Web.UI.Page.ProcessRequestMain(Boolean includeStagesBeforeAsyncPoint, Boolean includeStagesAfterAsyncPoint) --- End of inner exception stack trace --- When I go look at the file mentioned (EditExtension.ascx.vb, line 170), I see this line. Dim Writer As PackageWriterBase = PackageWriterFactory.GetWriter(Package) The only thing that seems to strike me is the Package isn't getting set? Does that help?

Sorry, it is outside what I can diagnose. Have you tried uninstalling and re-installing?

But you are right, it does seem likely that Package isn't being initialised. I would trace back to see where it should be initialised, see what calls are being made, and then check ths database to see if the right data is present.
