How many sub portals (parent and child) that DNN can handle? Or how many portals maximum for fair performance within single DNN host?
Please anybody who could share information. Thanks

Fannie ~ DotNetNuke has no application limits on this.  It depends entirely upon two things... the hardware used to host the installation and the traffic level of the portals.  We're aware of instances that run several hundreds of child portals from a single install (even more in some special cases).  So it really depends on what your usage scenario is going to look like.  Feel free to describe your use case a little and I'm sure you'll get some more feedback.

we run over 100 sub portals on a single portal.  Set up in virtual environment.  Lots of ram and lots of processor power, lots of drives, lots of backups.

There are disadvantages to doing so much on a single portal.   Your Heart about stops if when you see errors in the database.   Keeping the database rows and columns in perfect shape can be painful.   Full event logs happen over time.   Every module install causes the system to reset for everyone.

The advantages are licenses for modules sometimes allow cheaper solution for a single portal, unlimited subs.   Much easier to keep track of 1 database than 100 databases when doing upgrades.

We are considering opening up a 2nd main portal which may get 100s under it as well.  In set ups where there is only a core group of people with host access and 100s of admins.. multi-subportals are a nice way to go.   But if you have a lot of people spread out with host access.   Give them all their own portal.

My use case is I want to offer 'microsite' services to my clients. They can create own portals with templates defined by host. They will not have full admin rights, install own modules, etc. They just have access to modules defined in portal template and admin right for each page (but not admin right for portal). In this scenario, I think the best option is just to manage it within single DNN host rather than single DNN host for each. But I afraid in terms of performance and error management. In this case, is it possible to host thousands of sub-portals? WHich is the best option according to your opinion? Thanks

That sounds reasonable.   You will have some customizing to do with the template system to create user group and give only admin access to pages and not the full portal.  Otherwise several 3rd party providers have modules that auto portal create and help with billing.  Dnn can be set up in a farm and of course your hardware needs will be a factor.

Sounds like you got some work ahead of you. :)
