In my search for a Hosting provider, I was told that "DNN can be run on almost any linux box running PHP 5 and MySQL".  I don't think this is the case,  however even though I'll go with Windows hosting provider I wanted to check this statement before I call them out on it.

You are correct. All versions of DotNetNuke require Windows Server (or Windows XP, Vista, or 7 for low activity and development/test sites) and ASP.Net. The current version requires ASP.Net 3.5 SP1 or ASP.Net 4.0 as a minimum as well as MS SQL Server 2005 or 2008 (Standard or Express).
