I am very new and confused. We have a working copy of DNN now, but how do I see the DNN templates within visual studio to develop them? Did we install DNN incorrectly, or do I need to do something else? Do we still need to use the starter kit vsi file?

please see http://www.dotnetnuke.com/Community/Blogs/tabid/825/EntryId/2630/My-DotNetNuke-Module-Development-Environment.aspx for some help with this. To see the dnn templates you need to install the starterkit.

This blog is setting me up with a new website though isnt it?
Quote from blog:

I already have one, I just need to make modules for it. Am I wrong in my thinking?
