Hi,

I'm using a forms and list module, and want to have the top 3 records returned sorted by date in descending order. This does not work, however, when I don't set number of records returned, then the list will sort by date descending. With the number set, it will not display newly added records even if the date is the most recent.

You should use the xsl generator.  Make sure to check the box for paging and sorting.  Then you can just change the paging variable to this

<xsl:variable name="paging" select="3" />

Head to the bottom of the xsl code and remove the paging table...  That will give you more control over the entire look of your UDT.   I have it doing that all over my page to display last 2 or 3 items uploaded..

no, unfortunately this fix does not work as I don't want to enable paging. I just want to return the 3 most recent items by date. I'm able to sort no problem, and I am able to return 3 records no problem ... but I just can't do them together.

Please update to FnL 5.1.3. This should fix your issue.
