I built a custom membership provider for the Community Edition. If I install the Professional Edition, would my provider still work now and in the future? Is it likely the ProfileProvider class or the default membership provider would change in the Professional Edition? I am concerned because the source code is not available.

The professional edition of DNN is based on the source code of the community edition, so if there are ever any provider level changes you will almost assuredly see those in CE as well. That's not to say there will never be a custom Profile Provider for PE written, but it is unlikely that it would break existing providers, unless they also broke in CE due to core changes.
