Installed forum and gallery  with a couple of threads and posts ,

Was running fine and then clicked my settings for logged in user, and the error above has appeared.

Will work for other users , just not the user that the error has occurred on.

It then disappears and works ok after a while. Can anybody shed any light on this

Seen this a good half dozen times as well.  Fixes itself as far as I can tell after some unknown period of time.

This has occurred in that it seems that the forum tool is not portal specific, the layout of the site is as follows

Parent Portal
Child Portals

So if you update your forum settings in a child portal it gets upset as it is expecting the parent portal to be in control. re error
A critical error has occurred.
A control cannot modify its parents' control collections.

To replicate to problem you would update your settings in a child portal.

To fix the problem click on 'my settings' on the parent forum and then update. this should then give you access to the child forum again.

Seems I forgot a major piece of the puzzle , that the forum container had been deleted , and then reinstated from the recycle bin.

Does not occur with a new forum build.

I got the same error today. After recycling the app pool the problem went away. Interestingly enough, it didn't happen for admin accounts, only for normal users, and it started happening right after the application unloaded and reloaded due to a scheduled app pool recycle.

I have this error happen now every week or so.  The first time I went into the DB and transferred all Blog entries over to a new blog I created on a new page.

Now, I just change the web.config to reboot things and the problem goes away.

Just FYI, mine is a parent portal pointing to one domain and the problem usually occurs without anything changing on the site.  It seems to be very random.

Any ideas on what can be done to prevent this in the future?  I have about 400 users that rely on the blog on a daily basis, so the "critical error" glitch usually precipitates a lot of e-mails to me.

Thanks!
