This one I can help with - because I just used it to get around the current host.

Have a valid email address as the Host email.

Server Port: your normal email set up as in "smtp.mydomain.com"
Put in your email address and password

This bypasses the host sites email and you can use anyone's you want.

I still say there should be a SMTP setting for each PORTAL and one for the HOST so you can send emails with different domain names,  HOW can you send an email from contact@anotherdomain.com if the host is setup to contact@domain.com????

This is just not going to work for most people including all my sites.  I do not want ANY relationship with the host email to the portals I setup... HOW can this be accomplished?  The method you say using a relay server is considered using a SPAM server and most email servers will end up rejecting your domain emails as others abuse your mail servers IP address.

I assist your suggestion to move SMTP Settings to SiteSettings (Portal) and it is allready bloged on the Gemini as a Enhancement.  It is not sure when this want be come.

Baiscly it is not easy to find a solution.  One solution could be to add a Sender header to all outgoing emails, but this is also very often used by spamers and could go into the junk filter or path.
To move the SMTP settings to portal side did not want fix all of this issue about the sender must then still be on the same domain as the SMTP loging and must a existing email address.

The best solution is to setup the SMTP Server without checking the From header is on the same domain, and without the From header is a local emailaddress.  Only this will improve you that some notifications, Newsletter (BulkMail) or other email want NOT be send.  This are on the most SMTP servers are in the security settings.

As a Administrator I am not real a friend of minimalize the security, but I understand also the developement site and the Sender header isn't a official header.  If you disclaime to those 2 security settings it is a minor additional risk and the authentification is still needed!   So I think the solution for sendmail of DNN is at time the best, without it could not set for each Portal.

The fix I think should be pretty straight forward.   Make variables that are the settings for the PORTAL SMTP server settings should use the same script as the HOST SMTP settings.  The username, password, smtp server address, authentication type... should be stored for each portal, then use the same SMTP script for HOST to send those emails replacing those settings supplied in the fields for the PORTAL.  Then the Admin of each portal can adjust their own SMTP settings to work with their domains email servers.    And if setup like my email servers, they can use any address from that domain to send emails. Done... fixed...  I will do this eventually once I study the source when I have more time... it seems logical to me.  I am still new to DNN but used and modded many open source PHP CMS.

Right now my work around was to make a company email for each website portal and set the admin to that email address and forward those emails to the address of that admin.  A lot of work for each portal and its got me and my clients very turned off.

The other work around is to make seperate DNN installations for each website so you can have seperate HOST SMTP settings... again a lot of work but it makes the site use its domain name for sending emails instead of mine!

So like I said it should be a pretty straight forward setup for making emails go through the portals settings.  Make settings for each portal and the SMTP script to look for those settings first, if not set then use HOST settings.

Again, I host and run/manage my own servers.  I deal with blacklisted networks all the time for other companies and organizations.  I will run 2 DNN instances (one for each portal) instead of opening my server up to be a possible spam server getting my IP and networks on the blacklists of most email spam companies if I get hacked... which I will because I already deal with a lot of spam that gets sent internally that I cannot block but with internal software.  This spam would be going out of my network and getting my IPs of my network on the blacklists of spamhaus and others.

Here are the two solutions that work.

1. DNN is fixed with the ability to set the portal SMTP server settings independent from host SMTP settings.

2.  Install a seperate DNN installation for each portal so you can setup SMTP settings for each host allowing each domain portal to use its own SMTP server that is dedicated for that website.

3.  Get use the go daddy relay server settings to avoid blacklisting my email servers...

I vision some settings under "portal settings"  a SMTP server settings section.  All that really needs to be done is re-route the email traffic to the portal smtp settings for sending the email.  If no portal settings are set then it uses the default host settings.

I look forward to a release with this fix.
