I'm looking at an issue to get a site up and running quickly.  We are a new railroad museum and for the next 2½ years we need an online management system that can be brought in house and integrated with MS based desktops at some point after the museum is built.

Right now the "battle" seems to be my wanting to stay in the MS/IIS/SQL Server world due to long term needs vs WordPress and it's complete no cost solution.  As of now I'm fighting a battle I can't win even though both solutions cost the same.  Basically it comes down to someone knows Wordpress so let's go there now and worry about tomorrow later rather than look for a complete long term solution.

Right now, I'm looking for the following to solidfy my recommendation to go with DNN rather than WordPress.  I need the following components to add to a DNN install that will provide us a non-profit management solution:
  • A skin that is railroad themed - Immediate Need
  • A Blog module to keep the site content fresh - Immediate Need
  • An online newsletter module that is CAN-SPAM compliant that could interface with the modules below - Immediate Need
  • A Fund Raising module to solicit donations and promote the project - 2 to 4 month need.
  • A Donor Management module that will allow us to manage donations, both immediate cash and pledged, and if pledged, send period invoices - 3 to 6 month need.  It should also manage seperate fund raising campaigns, such as a Capital Campaign for the building and an Annual Fund Drive for day to day operating expenses.
  • A Membeship Management module that will allow us to maintain the membership base and communicate with them through an online newsletter - 5 to 8 month need
  • An Event Management module that will allow us to manage special events that will occur peridocially - 4 to 6 month need
  • A Project Management module that will allow us to manage the actual construction - Don't need for at least 6 months, probably longer
  • A Board of Directors Management module that will allow the Board to maintain organization documents, meeting agendas and some level of online collaboration - 1 to 2 month need
Ideally the Newsletter, Donor and Membership Modules would integrate or be one module, ie a member could also donate and news letter subscribers, donors and members would all receive the same electronic newsletter without having to send it three times.

Cost is an isn't an issue; the modules don't have to be free (thoug it would be nice if they were).  We don't want to pay unreasonable fees for the management modules above but realize that quality and the right solution can cost us some money in the long run.

Can anyone suggest modules that will provide our needed functionality?

Hi Dan - this is a wonderful, comprehensive description of what a non-profit organization needs in a website.  We've decided to go with DotNetNuke instead of WordPress just because it has a richer development environment and more flexibility in design.  However - we need the same modules that you listed - Donor Management, Membership - and I've been searching, and haven't found any DNN modules yet that perform those functions.

I did  find "Axon" - would be a good email manager & newsletter module.

Found "SigmaPro Draconis" - possibly for "Customer Relationship Management" (e.g donors) - but seems more geared toward helpdesk applications.

This post is from last year - did you ever get more information about possible DNN modules for Donor Mgmt and Membership Mgmt?

Thanks for any info  -

Oops, I just noticed that you just posted this!  I mis-read your "joined" date...so hopefully we'll both get some good recommendations!

Hi Dan - me again, because I'm really looking into this issue right now, and I'm faced with a problem. My experience is with DotNetNuke - I've developed several comprehensive websites using DNN, and have been very happy, plus I'm an ASP.NET programmer, so it's a good environment for me. As a result I've recommended DNN for this non-profit org that I'm helping. Well, someone just suggested an open source tool called CiviCRM - it looks wonderful for a non-Profit! At a quick glance, seems to comprehensively cover Donor Mgmt, membership, event sign-ups, email/newsletter generation...all focus on needs of a non-Profit. BUT - it's not a Windows system, only seems to integrate with Joomla! or Drupal, and used MySQL. So it doesn't seem like a good fit with a separate DNN website. I'm actually wondering if I should suggest Joomla or Drupal to my non-profit organization just so they can take advantage of CiviCRM. Does anyone know of any kind of similar system to CiviCRM for DotNetNuke?

I looked at CiviCRM and when I saw it was for Joomla I took it off my list.  A lot of non-profits are in this boat and like most of corporate america, need to stay on a windows platform.  We don't even have a museum yet, and we're looking at having to do everything remotely via the Internet for a couple of years which is a difficult thing to start with and even harder when you can't find all the tools you need.

What's making it more difficult is that this is a venture that brings together 3 groups and the web guy for one is an MS basher and thinks LAMP is the best option since the creation of fire.  He's pushing for WordPress for no other reason than he doesn't like MS and feels long term we should even put Lynux on desktops with OpenOffice.  Another guy from the thrid organiztion wants WordPress for the same reason, it's free and keeps us out of the MS world when he feels it's wasted money.  Both really aren't looking at the long term needs to have as much integrated as possible.  And I don't want to head anyplace that isn't going to make long term integration easy.

I did look at the onyaktech products and I'm probably going to go that route and find a way to make pledged donations work with it.  I'm probably going to contact them and see about another module or extention that would handle donations and another for memberships.
