Hi everyone,

I have purchased the professional version of DNN for our police Intranet and I am just about to start developing it to replace our existing hotch potch effort.

I have come accross a problem though which may sort itself out by the Autumn but I suspect it wont.

I am working on an internal secure server (Windows 2003R2) This has IIS6 and .Net 2 and SQLserver 2005. I have tried to get 3.5 installed but the way things work in our I.T. department means I have failed for now. I may be able to migrate to server 2008 with its benefits but for now I have to assume I work with what's available.

I have intalled DNN 5.1 which seems to be the newest version that will work without .Net 3.5 but only just. It is installed but very very slow.

What version would you suggest would work well and fast until I get server 2008?

Fazzer,

I would suggest DNN V4.9.5 as a stable a performant version of DNN.  As noted in this blog DNN 4.9.5 performs better than any of the current DNN V5 releases.

That being said, you may want to look at your current installation and see what issues may exist that are limiting performance.  There are several excellent blog post and forum posts on steps to take to ensure a performant site.  For example, check out Mitchel Seller's blog post on performance (here)

For what it's worth, I too am "stuck" in a production enviroment where I cannot move to current version as I am still on SQL2000 (corporate rules).  I am using DNN V4.9.4 and have few issue with performance.

Hope this helps
Paul.

Paul

Many thanks for you reply.

This information will save me days of prodding and poking around. It is interesting to hear you too have performance issues even with earlier versions. I will take a look at DNN 4.9.5 and the links you provided

I have not fully committed to the DNN development path yet. I don't want to chase my tail if poor performance is a more general trait of DNN. It seems like a superb solution but I need it to work without too much troubleshooting in the depths of the servers as I don't have the time/resources let alone patience.

I will research the posts now and see where I am going wrong, hopefully 4.9.5 will work.

Good luck kicking SQL2000. I feel privileged with 2005 ;-)

Stuart,
DNN 4.9.5 does indeed seem to be your best interim solution.  I would definitely suggest that you upgrade to 5.5 as soon as you are able.  It provides better performance than even 4.9.5.  As a DotNetNuke Professional user, you will also be able to take advantage of the Page Output Caching which will significantly improve performance for all of your semi-static webpages.  If you run into any issues, please feel free to post on the DotNetNuke Support Network which is included as part of your DotNetNuke Professional Subscription.
