I created a portal it it named the folder 1 that is accessed by the built in file manager.   Somehow this got changed and it now maps to _default portal so when I add a folder or file it will be in the wrong portal.  Meantime the file manager shows folder in portal 1 and _default.

be aware, that there are 2 file managers:
- the file manager in Host menu accesses _default portal directory
- the file manager in Admin Menu accesses current portal directory

That was exactly the issue thanks...the two file managers. Two further questions relating: Is there any way of creating folders with the filesystem and reflecting this in the file manager as I noticed there is a disconnect if you do it this way obviously the db not reflecting it. Can I point the file system to another set of folders than the default place...I have another set of folders on another drive on the same machine. Once again same issue also as above.

any folder created inside the portal directory tree will show up, when you click "synchronise" in top right corner of the file manager with "recursive" enabled.
