We have a very old version of DNN that is running on a Windows 2000 box using ASP 1.0 and a local SQL 2000 DB. I would like to (if possible) move the site itself to a Windows 2008 box running IIS7 and move the DB to a Windows 2008 box running SQL Server 2008.

At some point in attempting the move I was able to get into the site (from the new location) using Windows authentication, but form authentication would not work correctly. The current site allows for Windows authentication, but also allows us to log out of the site and log back in with a non Windows account.

I have also tried to uprade DNN after copying the files to the new location, but I can not get the site to connect to the DB after I do this.

Any help or advise would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Josiah

This seems tricky as you are using a very old version of DNN. If the goal is to upgrade eventually from DNN to a new version of DNN on the new server you should try to upgrade in parts. Here is what I would do:

  • Keep the old working version of DNN where it is now (on the old server) if possible. Do not mess with it.
  • Copy (don’t move)  this version with the database onto a Windows 2003 box. Use a virtual machine if you need to (Oracle's Virtual Box works well: http://www.virtualbox.org/)
  • Install that old version of DNN on ths Windows 2003 box and get it 100%. Since you have SQL 2000 you can install that on the 2003 server and get that working. The process is similar to Windows 2000 with the notable exception that you will need to enable ASP.NET 1.0 as an extension on Windows Server 2003.
  • After that is complete and you can confirm that the system is working. I would then proceed to an upgrade to the latest version of DNN on this box (the Windows Server 2003 box)
    • You may not be able to do the full upgrade from whatever version you are running to 5.4.4 straight. You should find a version that is slightly newer but not 5.4.4 yet. For example, upgrade to 4.5 first and then to 5.4.4
  • After you get the 5.4.4 DNN version going with your site on the Windows 2003 box, I would then proceed to copy the files and database onto the Windows Server 2008 box. Get the system working locally first, meaning having the database working locally, etc. Use another virtual machine if you need to. Then copy the database over to where you need it and change the web.config file accordingly.

A lot of different things to do but from what it sounds like this shouldn’t be a difficult thing. Post back with updates and questions if need be.

Sorry, but if you are running on ASP 1.0, the site will not run on Windows 2008 (please re-check the version, AFAIR only DNN 1 supported ASP.Net 1.0). Copy your site to a Windows 2003 machine and upgrade to 2.1.2 and 3.1.1 (requires .Net 1.1), further to 4.3.7 and 4.6.2, requiring .Net 2.0. Final upgrade steps will be 4.9.5 and optionally DNN 5.4.4. you may follow my upgrade checklist at http://www.deutschnetnuke.de/tabid/186/Default.aspx. DNN 4.9.5 will run fine on Windows 2008 and .Net 3.5 SP1, DNN 5.4 requires .Net 3.5 SP1 or .Net 4.0

Ok. So I have copied the site to the Windows 2003 box and restored the DB to a local instance of SQL. Everything appeared to work fine. I then copied 2.1.2 to the same site directory (overwriting any files that is wanted to overwrite). Now I have the DotNetNuke 2.1.2 page yet I can't seem to access our old pages. What steps am I missing?

Thanks
Josiah

Check in the web.config file the adress of the SQL Server!  Check physical permission settings where you located the files.
