Hello there! I've been using DNN versions 5.3.1 and 5.4.4 in tagent with each other. One thing that I've noticed is that in my version 5.3.1 DNN installation, the trust permissions (defaulted to medium) were set in the web.config. In 5.4.4, that portion of code is commented out, in lieu of the machine.config setting.

I have two questions regarding this: First, what was the reason for the switch, and secondly, what are the consequences of having DNN running in Full trust as opposed to medium trust?

Thanks in advance!

medium trust reduces the risk of a web site interfering with others and is usually set in machine.config, however for developers it is helpful to test their modules against minimal typical trust level, which is medium. Therefore this option has been included in development.config, but not in release.config, i.e. it looks like you were using different setups for your installations.
