First of al I am just a user... I have asked my hosting provider to help me upgrade DNN they said  I'll have to rebuild the whole site... I can't believe it wil have to be rebuilt from 0... the thought of it is really depressing ...

Is there any way to at least save the content of the site?  ( I don't have a local version only the one that is on the web ) I understand that if I upgrade to DNN4  then most of the custom  modules will not work ... so is it woth upgrading to DNN4 ? Maybe choose other less drastic version...

PLease help...

usually upgrading DNN simply means copying the installation files over the existing ones, adopting the web.config and start the application. There is no need to start with a clean db, but of course, you also need to do backups of DB and files and in a shared hosting environment, there might be additional necessary steps done.

If your host is not capable of offering DNN upgrades, you should consider to move to another one.

Well I am hosted by webseurestores... we had a problem that I couldn't create a subportal... everything would go as normal only when I go to subportal page it looked like all of the dnn basic page modules are missing, and subportal folder contained no DNN folders inside.... we went through quite a  lot of problems already ... and then when the problem still persist ( cannot create parent or child portal ) they said that I should upgrade from DNN 3.1.1 but if I do it I will have to do all from a scrap.

it's sad... I don't want to change hosting coz it will surely mean rebuilding all from the start ...

I am a very very beginer in this can you please tell me how to back up the DB ? and what will it save ( just texts? )

Backing up the db is usually done by db admin. it depends on the admin interface you got for your database, how to achieve this. In dotnetnuke, nearly everything except the system itself and uploaded files is stored in the database. There is a solution called gruposur backup, that can be used for easy backups.
