A clients website, running DNN 04.09.04 has suddenly developed a problem in the last couple of days.

When logged in we can't add a new page, or edit the settings for an existing page (page name, title, keywords etc.) - after clicking 'update' the page just sits there until the following error message pops up: sys.webforms.pagerequestmanager.timeoutexception: The server request timed out.

From a quick google this seems to be an ajax error - however I think this is a red herring, as we can still edit modules, delete pages, add new users etc. It just seems to be page admin functions that time out.

I'm completely baffled. Does anyone have any ideas of what might be happening?

I have seen issues like this develop after setting wildcard mappings in IIS, and using modules like PageBlaster.  Do either of these sound like they match your situation?

Also, while I do not know of any known bug that matches your description, it's worth noting that you should upgrade your site pretty soon.  If you're not comfortable with the version 5 series, at least move to 04.09.05 if and when you can.

Thanks Will - sorry for the late reply, have had a few days off!

We're not using pageblaster or any modules similar to it, so it may well be something to do with IIS - I'll have a chat with our engineers and see if they've been up to mischief with the server...

I'll also update DNN to 04.09.05!

Many thanks for responding :-)

Most likely, there is an issue with your database, please make sure the transaction log gets truncated on frequent backups and also check number of rows in tables EventLog and ScheduleHistory, which shouldn't exceed more than a few hundreds.

Thanks for replying Sebastian,

So far we've updated to 4.09.05, checked the transaction log - they were a reasonable size but we've truncated them anyway, same for the EventLog & ScheduleHistory - only a few hundred entries but we've cleared them.

Sadly it's made no difference to the editing or creating pages... although the site itself does seem faster and more responsive.

I'm running out of ideas with this :-(
