does dotnetnuke support integration with external source. like an web service which may be written in java or external site to fetch some of its data
or external database.?

yes, you simply create a module to access your external data e.g. a module that uses webservices. If it's to authenticate against an external store then create a custom authentication provider.

Isn't the anser to this question really... "No, not out of the box. But a developer could write a custom module to interact with nearly any sort of outside service."

It depends on the module being used, there are some modules like Reports, which allows accessing any SQL or OLEDB data. IWeb.adefwebserver.com shows, how to access web services provided by DNN.
