After upgrading my site is throwing null reference exceptions.  I debugged the DNN source and found line 287 of container.vb to be responsible:

If viewRoles = PortalSettings.AdministratorRoleName.ToLowerInvariant Then

The AdministratorRoleName property is initialized to Null.NullString and I was unable to find any place it is set.   This results in the null ref.

The upgrade runs without any sql errors, although there are some other errors (see below)

Any ideas?

the same problem (all the message) when i tried to upgrade from 4.9.5 to 5.4.2. where i can check when dnn shows "Executing Application Upgrades" ?

any suggestions please?

Hi ,


DNN 5.4.4 requires SQL Server 2005. Please make sure  all the requirments meet before upgradation. From  DNN 5.2 onwards  you need to have Sql Server 2005  or above and  Asp.Net 3.5 framwork to be installed.

If you have back up of your existing application ( website) and Database you need to restore everything first  and make all is working as it was before in 4.9.
Then upgrade SQL server to 2005 or above and install .NET 3.5 framework if it is not istalled . Also installed  .Net 3.5 SP1 and then  upgrade DNN 5.4.4 .

Hi Shawn,

 Ok.. the configuration wise it seems ok....while runing the script it has an error and it starts at 

00:01:54.606 -   Executing Application Upgrades: 05.00.00 Error!

I would request  you to please check the error log  under  rootFolder\Providers\DataProviders\SQLDataProvider
check file 05.00.00.SqlDataProvider and all other log file which triggered error. If you can post  here will be better to know  root cause.

I hope ypu have a  backup of  your site and database before upgrade.
