Please describe your technique to upgrading a live website with users on it. I am interested in how a site that is live and is actively getting new records added to the data base is backed up and upgraded without losing data.  In other words I can see that if I had a problem during the upgrade I would have to roll back to a data backup that was taken as close as possible before the upgrade, but on a really active site there could be numerous new posts, etc during the time between the backup and upgrade.

I am assisting the neighborhood association with there web site. They currently are using dotnetnuke 3.0.13 which is out of date. From what I have seen, to get to the current version you have to update one version at a time or start over. Want to get best advise on getting the update done. www.meredithneighbors.org I think I would rather start fresh (using a "sandbox" for setup and then do a redirect) but would like to keep the current skin.Is that possible?

typically for an upgrade on a busy site i recommend you take it offline i.e. either stop it in IIS, or else add an app_offline.htm page to stop all asp.net processing. That way you can ensure that all the files are copied over correctly, remove the app_offline.htm file and kick off the upgrade.

William, you don't have to upgrade version by version, but it's typically to do certain chunks at a time. http://www.willstrohl.com/Blog/EntryId/102/Suggested-DotNetNuke-Site-Upgrade-Path-s is a good reference (note: after 4.6.2 you no longer have to manually merge the web.config entries). As to the skin, dnn 3.x skins work the same in 5.x , just extract the skin from your site i.e. you could do a simple copy of the relevant files/folders, or actually zip them up and make them into an installable skin package.

I tried installing 5.x in a sandbox with the current portal files but despite the directions on how to configure the web.config file I can't get past an error.

Since I am going from 3.0.13 the question I have is how do I "merge" the web.config files?

I don't seem to be able to use the web installer so I am ftp the files to the site.
