I am new to DNN, it looks like it will fit my needs but I am having some problems getting started which i hope someone can assist with.

I am using VWD express 2010.

I tried the DNN visual studio starter kit but it failed to install which is disappointing.

I have tried the manual install following the article at http://www.aspfree.com/c/a/ASP.NET/ASPNET-DotNetNuke-Installation-with-Visual-Web-Developer-Express/2/

It gets part way through the database install and then fails:

Installing Database - Version 05.00.00...Success
Upgrading Database to Version 05.00.01...Success
Upgrading Database to Version 05.01.00...Success

Thanks for any assistance

I always prefer to use MS Platform Installer (www.microsoft.com/web) or Install package to install DNN framework and use starterkit for module templates only. Did you make sure, you are using SQL server 2005 or later? Do not manually touch web.config file (besides preparing connection strings, if you are familiar with it).

Thank you for your reply but as I explained I am using Visual web developer which come with it's own inbuilt development server - sql express and no I haven't touched web.config, i have simple created a new website via VWD and ran the DNN install wizard as per the instructions.

I must say I find it strange that I have issues with the starter kit so I am referred to try DNNs own install wizard which I again have problems with and now get referred to try The Microsoft Web Platform....

I'd rather not go down the path of trying ever more new install methods and would prefer some assistance with the install wizard. Anyone?

I've now tried the web matrix installer, after taking over 2 hours to install everything it needed, the DNN installer said:

'This product did not install successfully. The database 'DotNetNuke' could not be created. Login failed for user 'sa'.

As the error says:  You have a SQL Server connection issue.  The databaseuser could not login into your MS SQL Serevr and into the previously created Database.  You have to make sure that you have created the database and set the configuration before you install.  Basicly I would not use the sa user for any website, about it is the SQL Servers Systemadministrator, I would create a own user for it with only dbowner rights to the new created database.

Personally I like the manuell configuration of the web.config file in the root folder of DNN, by setting the 2 Connention strings to the database and make changes ot the databaseOwner and objectQualifier if it needed.  Also changing the cultures  Then I check if the permissions to all files, folders and subfolders are setting well. On the end I started the install as auto install, wish running the install w/o the wizard.

I don't know on what your issue with the connection caused, if anything was done on installing the database you have to clean or delete the database and recreate it.

There are a quick guide and some other documentation about install on this site you can download.
