you might need to install SQL Server Management Studio (Express) explicitly on any machine with access to the SQL server (or on the server itself)

Hm.... If I didn't have it, how can I be running SQL databases? I'm so confused. @.@ Secondarily - or primarily, depending on how you look at it, if I install it, will it mess with the databases that're already in place? I need to do a db backup so I can migrate, but the main link that I'm given is all KINDS of contradictive (minus ONE option that seems more like a shameless plug for a product that's nearly 400 bucks!). So how should I proceed?

Anthony,

MS SQL  Database and SQL Server Management Studio are two different things.

MSSQL Databases is where you create and host your database(s).

Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio Express (SSMSE) is an integrated environment for accessing, configuring, managing, administering, and developing all components of SQL Server.

Based on your MSSQL Server Edition, You can download the MS SQL Management Studio, 2005 Edition at http://bit.ly/3JTPJR  2008 at http://bit.ly/95Xp5n 2008 R2 at http://bit.ly/9nVNKL

“Will it mess with the databases that're already in place? “ NO…Installing the correct Version of SSMSE on the same machine as your database will not cause any trouble.

Once you installed the SSMSE run the SQL Server Management Studio from All Programs in Windows, enter “local” in (Server name), select “SQL Server Authentication” in (Authentication), enter your Database Login and Password, Click on connect.

Once logged in Expand “databases” from the left menu and you will see all your databases.

I hope this will help.

Wow, thanks Rashid!

So here's the thing, now:

I downloaded SQL:SMS and went to run it... And a dialog box popped up saying that there are known compatibility issues with SQLEx2008 and Win7.64 and suggested I *RE*download SQLEx2008 *AND* it's SP2! (About 500MB in file transfers)

WTF!?

So, I opted to NOW run them beyond the installer JIC it mangles my framework, already in place.

Anyone know anything about this?  Can I install the Management Studio, ignoring the stupid warning 0 and not re-re-instaling SQLEx2008, or am I pretty much bent over?

Anthony, Before I suggest you anything else I would like to know that, which MSSQL Server Version is installed at your local machine? Did you download the correct version of SSMSE?
