Hello,

I have a website that calculates taxi fare price - www.taxiroute.co.uk

At the moment it only allows people to calculate a fare based on an address.

The problem is very often people just want to do an enquiry from an airport or a railway station and they dont know the complete address and so cannot complete the enquiry.

So, I have collected the lists of airports and railway stations and now I want to change my enquiry screen to include this information.

I want to offer the user a dropdown box where they select from "Address/Airport/Railway" station and when they change it the screen automatically updates without doing a call back to the server. For example, if they chose Address then it would offer 3 input boxes. If they chose airport it would display a dropdownlist of airports and if they chose railway, it would again be a list of train stations...

My understanding is the best way to do this would be using AJAX. Is this correct?

If so, can anyone give me some hints on how to do this please?

Thanks

Trev

I would look into the AJAX toolkit - it has comboboxes that populate without postback etc - check the samples. I would also consider a Silverlight UI but you do limit your target market (there's a fair amount of Silverlight/MS haters out there).

From a usability POV - have you considered allowing a user to chose the location on a Google/Bing  (with Auto location finding like I do on PokerDIY here) map as well?

I am getting a Volusion Chat error on your homepage by the way. Looking good otherwise!

Hi Trevor,
Assuming that the amount of data you are bringing down to the client is not too much, you could do this quite easily just on the client.  Fully populate the form with the airport, railways stations etc and then, using jQuery or similar, hiding and revealing the select boxes you want based on the events raised by your airport/address/railway selector.
