i now have 2 separate hosting facilities with servers of my own in them. and yes, that means 2 separate internet connections for serving web sites, yay.

my initial thought was to have the DNN install in one facility and serve images/videos from the other facility. has anyone done this? do you guys actually see a performance improvement?

There are a lot of factors that come into play here.

1.) Typically you want to keep items downloading from as few locations as possible, BUT under the case of heavy video loads, etc it can be helpful to offload.
2.) Management of the links/files can become quite tricky to say the least with a separate file management system than your actual CMS.
3.) You introduce two points of failure for each site.
