From the video tutorial on installation, I've downloaded and installed the MS SQL Server (Express), The SQL Server Management Express, I've connected the ISS, unzipped DNN, and followed the video step by step with every configuration except that I could not locate the Web Configuration File that's supposed to be with the DotNetNuke files.

When I try to log on to http://localhost/dotnetnuke (like form the video) I get the error

Server Error in '/DotNetNuke' Application.

Object reference not set to an instance of an object.

Description: An unhandled exception occurred during the execution of the current web request. Please review the stack trace for more information about the error and where it originated in the code.

Exception Details: System.NullReferenceException: Object reference not set to an instance of an object.

I'm using Windows XP Media Edition SP2 and the MSN SQL info said that the version of the SQL Server I downloaded is supposed to work on this machine.

Is this happening because I am missing that Web Configuration File? If so, then how can I get the file?

If not, then anyone have any idea where I went wrong? Everything seemed to setup like it's supposed to.

I am new myself. I installed using the starter kit. In that, the web.config file was kept in a file with a different name release.config, in order to account for some future upgradeability issues. We have to rename the release.config to web.config .  Not sure if your problem gets resolved by this, but if you see a release.config in the root, you can try this solution.

be sure, you use DNN 3.2.2 or DNN 4.0.3 and check the settings for the virtual directory in IIS, using the correct ASP.Net version (ASP.Net 2.0 for DNN 4, ASP.Net 1.1 for DNN3).

Restart IIS. If the error is still shówing up, please indicate more precisely, at what stage (before showing the start page, when switching pages, on login, ...).

Thank you so much for the reply. This is a brand new install and I haven't even got to the point yet where I could begin to build anything. I'm just trying to get the local host working.

I discovered I had the wrong version of DNN because I had ASP.Net 2.0. I deleted the DNN and got the 4.0 version and installed it (I tried both the starter kit and the install version.)

I found the web config file called release.config and modified it according to the video, adding the SERVER, USERNAME, and PWD. I wasn't sure what to put for the SERVER so I copied the server name that shows up when I go into SQL Server Manager Express and pasted it in the config file. The local host said it couldn't find the web config file, so I renamed release.config to web.config.

Now when I go to the local host (http://localhost/dotnetnuke) I get this message:

Could not find file 'c:\DotNetNuke\Providers\DataProviders\SqlDataProvider\DotNetNuke_template.mdf'.

I can see the folder this is pointing to, but it doesn't have any files with an .mdf extension in there.

Now what?

Appreciate your input.

I found the answer to the ".mdf file not found" here on the forums and have fixed the web.config problem. I have fixed the login problems (I think) and now have a brand new error.

DotNetNuke Upgrade Error

The Assembly Version ( [ASSEMBLYVERSION] ) does not match the Database Version ( [DATABASEVERSION] )

ERROR: Could not connect to database.

The stored procedure 'dbo.GetPortalAliasByPortalID' doesn't exist.

So now what?

Sheesh...every time I fix one problem a new one pops up.
