I am a new DNN user (actually, just got to the point where the Community version is installed). I have an important question about how we work with a developer (not part of company). Specifically, we're looking to outsource the initial transition of our existing web site to DNN. For that we'll create a functional spec and then have the developer creates a site. He will then pass this on to us to test and deploy. Deployment here means moving the site to a server we run in the cloud (plus an identical backup server).

My questions are about subsequent "passing" of the site thereafter.
  • How does the developer send us the web site?
  • How do we put the DNN site into production (copy it from our own development server to the production/backup servers)?

Thanks in advance.

Mark

The initial deployment is as simple as getting a database backup and a filesystem backup.  You can then restore each to the new servers, and update the web.config to do the deployment.

Thank you, Mitchel. That's good to know. And subsequently - once I am up and running on the production server and (for example) have a new page or two that I need to update. What deployment tools/techniques exist to handle this?

Thanks.

Any thoughts on this anyone? To recap, I am trying to understand how I would deploy a change from a development/test environment to our production environment (this is on an ongoing basis, after the initial deployment of the site as a whole). I guess the obvious examples are where a web page is updated or a new page is added. How do I get this from test to production?

Thanks.

Mark
