What editor is good for DotNetNuke projects?

I am trying to edit an ASCX page and if I use Visual Studio 2008 the design mode just shows controls boxes, but all it says is "Error creating control, Cannot find web project item W:\websites\lifestyle\index.acsx".   The file I am editing is NOT that file.  I am editing Index.ascx, but it is several folders down in the default skins folder.  There is no file Index.ascx in the root folder.

If I open the file in Visual Web Developer 2010 Express, it changes the project to DotNet4 and the DotNetNuke site will not run after that.  I have to erase the DNN site and restore it from a backup.

I can easily open it in a text editor, but I would like to have something that shows at least roughly what the page will look like when used on the site (a design view).

I would appreciate any suggestions.

I faced the same issue, and the conclusion i came to was: in design mode, controls are only placed in the place holders in a rough way, all formatting is being done using css at runtime. so cant check the page design without executing it in browser.

might be some expert can give a good opinion.

there is no wisiwyg for UI of module controls, because the styles get added by skin and containers. Please be aware, that pages of your site like "home.aspx" are NOT physically stored, but dynamically created from skin, containers and modules.
