Would there be a way to have the DNN site recognize registered users so that they can bypass the log-in page much the same way as dotnetnuke.com does.  As it is right now, using DDN4, this does not happen on my setup.  I use the site as a small office intranet and would like to encourage it's use as a "homepage" but am met with resistance due to this exact issue.

Any thoughts?

You can't setup your server though all your users have the possibilitie to check the "remember me" option during login. So a permanent living cookie is stored on the users computer.

If you had an Active Directory Server, I would suggest using the Active directory integration for authentification.

Funny enough, dotnetnuke.com this time around did not recognize me and I had to login manually.  But, I digress.

The "Remember Me" check box does display, and it does work - occasionally.  For instance, using FireFox right now, I've checked the "Remember Me" option and the feature works.  That is to say that if I close the browser and reopen the browser in a few minutes, the site opens and I am automatically logged in.  However, this will eventually go away.  I will be back to needing to log in manually.  This leads me to believe if the cookie is not permanent but rather set to expire at a given length of time.  The same seems to happen with IE.

The "Remeber Me" check box has the effect that I am after but it does not seem to last.

I'd rather not explore the Active Directory for authentication for various reasons.

You're correct, the cookies are not permanent, they are known as persistent cookies, and can be set to last for as long as you like. People think they're permanent as under asp.net 1.1, they last for 50 years. As you're using DNN4.x (which uses asp.net 2.0), you can decide how long you want them to last. See http://www.dotnetnuke.com/Community/Blogs/tabid/825/EntryID/233/Default.aspx for details e.g. 10080 is a 7 day persistent cookie.

Thanks Cathal, that seems to be the solution I am looking for.  A couple of questions though as I don't want to screw anything up:

1) I have something that seems like what you are talking about in the form of a <authentication mode="Forms"> node.  But I'm not sure if this is to what you are referring.  Instead, I have nodes about Anonymous Identification (which already is set longer than what the current log-in cookie expires at) and some Membership and Role Manger nodes that also mention cookies and their associated timeout values.  Where should I make the change in order to allow a longer period of time for an automatic log-in?

2) If this is a secruity concern (to have long lasting cookies), is there an industry recognized or recommended anout of time to set for this type of cookie?  I.E. 7 Days, 1 Month, 3 Months, etc...

I appreciate you time and clarification as I am not too familiar with this end of things for DNN or web.config.
