Hi,

This is a DNN 5.5.1 portal.  I am getting the error:

There was an error setting the password. The password has not been changed.

I get this when logged in as super user or administrator and attempting to change the password for user accounts.

I have no idea why this is happening with this portal...  Please note that it was originally a 4x portal that has been upgraded a few times over the last few years - right now it is current - 5.5.1.

Can anyone point me in the right direction in attempting to figure this out?

Thanks in advance

Update - I added some code to trap the error in:

DesktopModules\Admin\Security\Password.ascx.vb

Now I am seeing the reason for the error:

********************* System.Web.HttpException: Unable to validate data. at System.Web.Configuration.MachineKeySection.EncryptOrDecryptData(Boolean fEncrypt, Byte[] buf, Byte[] modifier, Int32 start, Int32 length, IVType ivType, Boolean useValidationSymAlgo, Boolean signData) at System.Web.Security.MembershipProvider.DecryptPassword(Byte[] encodedPassword) at System.Web.Security.MembershipProvider.UnEncodePassword(String pass, Int32 passwordFormat) at System.Web.Security.SqlMembershipProvider.GetPassword(String username, String passwordAnswer) at DotNetNuke.Security.Membership.AspNetMembershipProvider.ChangePassword(UserInfo user, String oldPassword, String newPassword) at DotNetNuke.Entities.Users.UserController.ChangePassword(UserInfo user, String oldPassword, String newPassword) at DotNetNuke.Modules.Admin.Users.Password.cmdUpdate_Click(Object sender, EventArgs e) in C:\DevPortals\HRUpgrade\DesktopModules\Admin\Security\Password.ascx.vb:line 303 *******************

It looks like the machineKey section in web.config is messed up.
