I am evaluating DNN for the development of an in-house intranet.  Years ago I worked with a predecessor to DNN (PortalVBVS) so I have a clue how things work, but when it comes to creating new modules I am confused and don't know where to start.  I wish I could attend the sessions at DevConnections next week - I asked but was turned down. :(

I started with Chris Hammond's Module Development Webinar, downloaded his VB templates, but I can't get it to create a project becuase IIS refuses to create/configure a virtual directory.    I am running XP, that might be the problem (nothing I can do there, corporate policy).   I left a message on his blog seeking assistance.

I found a DNN Community Starter Kit, looks like it installed some templates in my VS2010 folder but have no idea how to use it.

Is Mitchel Sellers book a goot starting point?

This is for a corporate site, so we dont' need to worry about distributing to other companies.    Rigth now I am the only developer, but we nee to plan for multiple developers.   I realize there are likely multiple paths - I'm just a bit overwelmed trying to find a direction.   Any ideas/tips would be greatly appreciated.

TIA,
Lou

To use IIS with Visual Studio you wil need to run it as Admin so VS has rights to IIS.  You can use the built in asp.net server as well if you cant get rights to do that.  You can use the templates by going File --> New Project and selecting the VB Compiled tempalte.  This will give you a good starting point for a new module.  The Wrox DNN Professional book is pretty good for module development.  Alse checkout AdefWebServer's site http://adefwebserver.com/dotnetnukehelp/.

I am running it on a standalone XP Pro system, and my user is an admin so it looks like I should be good there.      When I was watching Chris Hammond's video his system didn't ask him anything about setting up the virtual directory when he created his project, however he was running on Windows 7 so I wonder if that is the root cause of my issues.   According to his docs XP won't allow me to run the site when I type http://dnndev in the browser due to limitations in Xp's version of IIS.     I am going to set up a virtual machine running Server 2003 (or perhaps 7 Pro if our MSDN license comes in today) and try it there - gotta love VMWare. :)

The host system is running 7 Home Premium 64-bit (I couldn't find a decent laptop running 7 Pro off the shelf :(  ).   I'm thinking about doing an update to get it to 7 Pro.   Would I run into problems with DNN/module development running the slight-stripped-down version of IIS on 7 Home Premium?

At the risk of starting a holy war, from everything I have read it appears that the path I want to take is to create a Web Application Project,   That way I dont' have recomplie/deploy the entire site when adding/modifying a custom module.   Custom modules are going to be very important to us - I have a list of several I am dying to get started on...     My post on Chris' blog hasn't been approved yet, so for now I will take a look at the VB Compiled template and see what I can do with it.

Thanks for the info!
Lou
