you need to go to Extensions in ADMIN menu and grant publish permission to administrators user role, and they will get it listed in the Control panel dropdown list (btw: did you try our Advanced Cotrol Panel from www.oliverhine.com yet?)

I am definitely doing that. I have to say though, now I've got it installed I recall the other reason I got rid of it... I'm probably using it wrongly but I can't seem to view sent messages, plus there doesn't seem to be any option to modify it in Settings. Logging in as a registered user, I can view the profile page with the Message module on it, but I don't have permission to create a message. I've found a Permissions thing in the Extensions page - editing the Messaging module user settings, but I have no clue what to do with it. I can't find a user manual anywhere. So, again, can anyone advise please? Thanks

the module has some UI limitations, AFAIR you need to be in edit mode to create messages (sorry, I haven't used it in production yet on any of my or our clients' sites).
