I can't upload load media files. I have tried from the file manager and I also installed the media module. Everytime I get a 404 error. However I can upload other types of files such as text using the same method. I uploaded the media files using FTP which worked however I can't see them in DNN. If I upload other types of files via FTP I can see them fine in DNN. Why would this be happening?

You likely need to add the extension of the files you are uploading to the Allowable Upload Extensions on the Host/Host Settings page (logged in as a super user)

Additionally, depending upon the size of the media files that you intend to upload and whether your site is hosted on IIS 6 or IIS 7, you might need to make a change to your websites "web.config" file.  There is a node that limits the size of file that can be uploaded to your website (DNN or other).  So if this setting is too small, DotNetNuke cannot upload your file.  In IIS 6 the setting is "maxRequestLength" and is part of the "httpRuntime" node and sets a default size limit of 4MB (which is not very big).  IIS7 is a little more generous and the default size is about 28 MB.  You can read more about this here.

Also, I have several Silverlight uploaders that will allow you to upload massively large file to DNN:
