My client wishes me to roll everything back to 4.8.4 and either wait for an upgrade path that works or find a product that does.

At a minimum I need to find a migration and test methodology that lets me test DNN upgrades off-line on a second TEST instance.  I have a clean/virgin DNN 5.5.1 install and a backup copy (actually many...) of my database.  What I need is some help either modifying the database to run with the new DNN instance or to modify my DNN instance to work with my 'restored' database, on GoDaddy.  This seems like it should be straightforward...

All I ever do to test is:-
  • Have a working site, i.e. and IIS site that functions for DNN and a SQL Server the DNN site can access
  • Copy the files from my production site down to my test site as is.
  • Modify web.config to point at my test SQL server - usually needs doing in two places in web.config, but can be one
  • Restore the backup of my production DB to my test SQL server. I then add an account (as configured in web.config above) as the dbowner of the restored database
  • Access the test site, and all should be well

One gotcha, it is worth adding the url you will access your test set via as an alias on your production site prior to backing up and downloading. You can hack then in via the PortalAliases table after if you have done the restore if needed.

Cheers
Roger

I was able to backup and restore code and data to and from production tweaking only sql connection strings and/or machine key settings in web.config.

The portal alias hint was also helpful.  Slick.  I am sooo grateful.  I will always be able to put up a backup site in a heartbeat.

Bad news is I can break even a virgin DNN w/ Forum install with my live user db in a matter of minutes...

Will try to narrow it down; it involves some combination of:

-initial Post(s) by host or admin
-Avatars off
-Moderation off (0 threshold)
-"Discussion" name changed on 'first' forum (to "Web Site")

I may have changed one or two other settings.

Once the error begins, nothing makes it stop.  I will try restoring the working db (I saved it in-process) and repeating my steps under the delusion someone may be able to use the info.

Question:  Module says turn caching off.  I only have two options; page and memory.  Is this due to my hosting (GoDaddy) setup or typical?  If I can turn caching off, how?

Virgin 5.5.1 and virgin Forum 5.0.0 and NEW db and new data (users, etc) CANNOT be broken, so far, by the same steps as before.  This tells me that there is something in my 'data' carrying over; the only thing I can think of is a user setting or something...  Solving this will require more time and expertise than I can muster...  It also may be my problem is unique and not worth going after.

Are there any 'tools' available for parsing data tables in the db looking for weird things?  I did find bonkers stuff in some tabs tables that DNN was 'forgiving of' in previous code that created fits in 5.5.1.  Could be an issue here?
