OK here's what I've determined I need to do so far:

1. Uninstall XML module before upgrade (due to BC30002: Type 'Web.HttpResponse' is not defined. error)

2. Uninstall Chat module before upgrade (or modify DnnChatCodeHelper.vb as per http://local.dotnetnuke.com/tabid/795/forumid/133/postid/359826/scope/posts/default.aspx)

3. Perhaps change to Minimal Extropy skin?

Yet, I still get the following errors.  Any thoughts on how to get them to become successes?

Also confirm that the ASP.Net worker process account (Network Service or IIS AppPool\DefaultAppPool or a custom account depending on IIS version) has been granted full permissions on the root folder of the site installation.

Thanks - Yes my version says 3.5.  And yes, Somehow my permissions changed ---- I had my host reset the permissions and still get most of the same errors, unfortunately.

All of the config file and other installs which failed involve attempts to modify web.config. Those config file updates which indicate success are all ones in which there are no changes being made to web.config. So, it still appears that either the ASP.Net worker process account does not have full permission on the root folder of the DotNetNuke installation or the web.config file itself is set as being read-only. Some hosts (GoDaddy in particular)do not allow the granting of full permissions on the root folder - hence the need to install in a sub-folder of the root which has its disadvantages.

I would discuss this again with your hosting provider making sure that they understand which account is the correct one to which full permissions must be granted on the root folder - the account varies depending on which version web server or IIS is in use. Also, don't forget that when an upgrade fails you need to restore the site files and database to backups created prior to the upgrade then after making any corrections to permissions, etc., try the upgrade again.
