I was in the process of upgrading from 5.5.1 to 5.6.  I added an app_offline file to the root, copied the upgrade pack to the server and deleted the app_offline file.  I then navigated to the site.

As the site was loading, I mistakenly copied the app_offline.htm file back to the root.  I deleted it immediately, but I think the damage was done.  I am now getting a screen telling me that 'The site is currently unavailable' Please check back later.

Could my upgrade be happily running on the remote server?  Can I tell?

Is there anyway to restart the install?

Thanks

Your best approach is to restore your back up and do it again.  However you can also navigate to Install/Install.aspx?mode=upgrade and that may kick it off for you depending on when it aborted previously.

I restored the system and re-ran the upgrade.

As smooth as can be!!!!!!
