I just upgraded from 5.5.1 to 5.6 and can no longer login to the DNN site nor can I send an email using the forgot password link.

  1. I backed up the file system and database and renamed the old DNN folder.
  2. I expanded the Install zip file into a clean folder, copied over my module folder and copied the web.config touch points to the new 5.6 config file.
  3. I opened the site and the upgrade finished fine.
  1. I tried restarting IIS.
  2. I checked the database and my host account DNNDev is listed in the user table along with the admin user.
  3. I know the passwords and tired mine as well as the install defaults.

Are there log files I can look at?  Any other ideas?

Update: I am receiving emails from DNN after I locked the account out. Also, I verified the site worked prior to upgrading.

Thats not quite how you do it.  All you need to do is take a backup as you have done then unzip the "Upgrade" pacakge over your site, then browse.  This will upgrade your site.
The way you did it means you now have the worng web.config file with different machine keys, hence you cant login etc.

Thanks for the help Phil. The problem I have with upgrading in place is the Install package's web.config can contain additions, deletions, edits that will not be in the existing web.config. Also the file system can contain deletions that will not be realized by an in place upgrade. To get back to where I was I restored the database and file system and opened the site as a check. I overlayed 5.5.1 with 5.6 and was able to upgrade and login. Thanks again...ed

Ed, if you use Upgrade package (not install), it will not contain a web.config file, but the upgrade logic built into the DNN installer will execute XMLmerge scripts to adopt your web.config and delete files, which are no longer used.
