I'm using, Windows 2008 R2, IIS 7.5, SQL Express 2008 R2 and Active Direcory.

I unpack the zip to C:\inetpub\wwwroot\dotnetnuke and in IIS i convert to application using DefaultAppPool wich uses ApplicationPoolIdentity, when i go to the folder to add permission i can't find the ApplicationPoolIdentity user, when i browse to http://localhost/dotnetnuke/ i get the following error:

Unauthorized Access Error

Error Details

File C:\inetpub\wwwroot\dotnetnuke\Portals\_default\\Logs\LogFailures.xml.resources
Error   Access to the path 'C:\inetpub\wwwroot\dotnetnuke\Portals\_default\Logs\LogFailures.xml.resources' is denied. The Windows User Account listed below must have Read/Write Privileges to this path.

I have found the following IIS.Net article to give the best explaination as to which user to grant full permissions on the root folder and all child folders of the website:

http://learn.iis.net/page.aspx/624/ap...

Note that this is not a "real" user so it will not appear in the Windows folder permissions grid. You will need to add and select the user using "IIS AppPool/DefaultAppPool" as the name on which to check.
