I don't know where to plug this question in; it may be similar to the question on tokens which never got a clear answer that I could find.

I need to have the XML module communicate with the page it is embedded in. I will be querying an XML service that can send back one of up to 6000 possible categories of text/data. I don't want to build 6000 pages with each XML query hand-embedded.

Is there any way to get the QueryString of the host html page to pass to the XML module and be appended to the XML source URL.?

If there isn't, is there somewhere to add this function to a wish list for the XML module?

I am looking into writing my own modification of the core XML module to do this; I would like to get the function into the core module so that I wouldn't need to update my version every time there is a new DNN version.

The main issue within the Xml module is the lacking of context. Your request is a bit similar to the available token request. Currently it is not possible to access the querystring

Nobody is working on the core Xml module though I hope that this doesn't mean it will be dead forever.

The complete Xml-forum has only 12 running threads. Whoever will get lead of this module will have no problem to analyse all requests inside. So your post will not been overseen.

Tell us about your fortune writing the modification. Post the code inside this forum as a reply to this thread.

A second possibility is to post your request and comments inside the DNN Core Framework [ PUBLIC ] section inside gemini.

I have modified the XML module to do exactly what you are trying, you are welcome to it although I have NOT put it into an installable module.  This is why I have not released it on the community.  We are using it extensivly in an important work related project.  If you interested then please email me at simon at chi.swan.ac.uk (obviously need to change - do not want spam bots seeing this email address), if you get no answer in 24 hours try again as my anti spam is an agressive little beast.

I am trying to get the DNN team to start devloping the XML module again, so that this funcationality can be added to the core product.

As a core member can you give any details about the ongoing lack of development in the XML module ?

Are the core team considering anybody, I have offered my services in anyway that can help move this forward but have not heard anything offer then my email has been passed on... etc ?

Thanks

Simon

Thanks for your prompt response, Simon,

I would be very interested in using your customized XML module. I wrote you an email a few minutes ago, but thought that perhaps I should leave a post on here as well.

On the topic of modules communicating with the host page and with each other: doesn't DNN have any mechanism for such communication? I was expecting some kind of access to/from the browser variables, including the post or query strings or by context setting by means of session variables. I am used to doing that on the old classic .ASP pages.
