I was wondering if someone could explain the multi Portal in Lamen / Idiot terms for me. I have read all I can find, and I am confused.
1) Lets say I have two domains: gabe.com, and Simon.com. Gabe.com is already pointed to my DNN site. How is it possible to have simon.com point to the same site (IP) but different portal?
    a) Does it have to be a subdomain? (I don't want that - I want it to be transparent to the end user)

Thanks for helping out the Newbie!

I am asking cause I thought I was going to have to purchase a new MSSQL, and DNN set up for the second site.

Gabe

(PS - I wish those DNN books would be released! I am sure it would help with a lot of these questions, like how to charge $ - but that is for another day :))

your name server needs to point to the IIS for multiple domins using different host headers (and the web site in your IIS needs to be configured appropriate, responding to them), while DotNetNuke checks the url to select the appropriate portal for your needs.

I am going to take a stab at this one for you.  I currently have one DNN install and it is running 6 sites, each with their own Domain Names.

Here is how it works.

You create a Parent or Host Site(ex. http://www.something.com).  In the Host site you have an option to add a new Sub Portal.  This Sub Portal can have a completely different Domain Name, skin, etc.  It is basically just a completely different site.  All the Sub Portals are able to use the Modules and Skins that are installed in the Host Site.

A real life example of this would be my site (still working on it, just about done)  http://www.neighborhoodflier.com  (This is a parent)  I have a sub Portal site http://www.lehoa.org which can aslo be accessed at www.neighborhoodflier.com/lakesideestates.

As you can see these two sites look completely different and have different Domain Names, but they are both run off of one install of DotNetNuke.

I know that got long, but I hope it helps you out.

That helps a lot - I guess now what I am wondering is (if you have min) - how would I set it up.

So all I need to do is set up a Sub Portal under my Host Site? and have the same dns for for both domains and DNN will know which to do??

You are pretty much right on target.  When you setup a sub portal on DNN you specify which domains will point to that sub portal.  Then simply have your domain names point to your server DNN install and DotNetNuke will know how to handle it.

Once you see the settings it will be quite clear.
