The other thing you may need to examine is the effect of = applying a tempate update to the live site.

Are you proposing to wipe all the content and replace it with the contents of the new template each time.

This may have implications for site logging and google analytics / google indexing etc.

The staging process seems perfect for some of the updates that we'd want our websites to have.
However, in the pages and modules of my website I've only seen the workflow-property available for the HTML-module. (Works perfect there, off course).

But could you please explain to me how I can use staging for the following changes I foresee for the website:
- New link or download. I'm using the DNN-modules 'Links"and 'Documents' for these modules. They don't have a staging property, do they? Is there another way to prepublish changes/additions in these modules?
- New newsitem. I'm using the module Expandable Text/HTML for my News-section. This will probably the most frequently updated section of the website, so a review-possibility is absolutely necessary. How can I arrange this?

Saying this, I realise that importing and exporting the entire website from a test-installation, every time I add some news to the website, is not a workable situation either. So I'm eager for advice on this!

For news modules - have a look at the announcements module or some of the news/announcements modules on snowcovered.

Most announcements type modules support a form of staging in that they allow you to set Publication dates
= until the publication date arrives the news/announcement item will only be visible to administrators and those with edit permissions.

Alternatively - it may be worth you looking at some coding work - each of the core modules make source code available to developers.

It would be possible to add a form of  staging to any of the core modules - but this would obviously break compatibly with any future core module updates.

There is another possible option in all this if you again have some coding skills.  In the past we have had clients that had some similar needs to yours.  For one in particular - they wanted to do staging on a separate system for some specific parts of the site.  Other areas such as their forums and user management however were not staged.

We developed a module for them that basically synchronized specific modules on their two sites.

Something to think about ---

Just on a side note - there is one other option that few people know about - but its only for those with deep pockets and specific needs.

The dotnetnuke enterprise version includes a staging system that actually does what you were originally asking for - that is staging on one server with syncronization to a live server - but lets be honest unless you client just completed a venture capital round its unlikely - their budgets will extend that high up the food chain.

Thanks for your reaction, again!

However, most of the options you mention probably won't do for us. Too expensive, or too intensive.

For the news-section, my guess is that if I want staging I should settle for an existing module. Can you recommend a module that supports staging but also gives me the opportunity to create the same kind of functionality like I did with the Expandable HTML-module on www.teamhelvoirt.nl?
There's a short News-section on the front-page that shows the first two records of the News-items that are fully placed on the News-page ('Nieuws').
I actually did work with the announcement-module but felt that it didn't give me the freedom to configure it as I wanted it to be.

For all other modules like the download, FAQ and Link module, I'm starting to think how big a deal it would be if I placed these on the website without giving a client the opportunity to review it at first. Any experience on what's the usual manner at companies on this?

NB. The other modules are not in the website I mentioned as an example.
