I've updated a 3.x.x install of DNN to the latest version. I backed up all my files, created a new database, uploaded the new version over the previous files, set up the web.config file properly per instructions, made sure permissions are properly set for everyone to read, write, execute, adjusted the trust level the web.config file to "Full,"  and renamed the app_offline.htm file to app_offline.htm.save. When I launch the stie with the http://www.webdomainname.com/install/install.aspx?mode=upgrade I get the following error:

Unhandled Error

Error Details

File \Logs\LogFailures.xml.resources
Error   Request for the permission of type 'System.Security.Permissions.FileIOPermission, mscorlib, Version=2.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b77a5c561934e089' failed.

Any suggestions on how to fix this error would be greatly appreciated.

Thank,
Glenn

you need to use same database and switch ASP.Net version to 2.0, when moving to DNN 4. You need to upgrade in multiple steps via DNN 4.3.7, 4.6.2 and 4.9.5, you may follow my upgrade checklist: http://www.deutschnetnuke.de/tabid/186/Default.aspx. Next to 5.4.4 before installing 5.6.1.

You've come a long way, baby!  That's quite an upgrade!

For as hard as we work to make upgrades seamless... there are a few points in the evolution of the upgrade process that mark good "stepping stones".  For example, it was in the 3x to 4x upgrade that we changed to ASP.Net 2.0.  One good reference to start from would be the suggested upgrade paths found in our wiki here.

Cheers

Okay, I had a really messed up site and finally had to completely restore the site from backup. Upgraded to 4.9.5 without problems. Working on the next upgrade to 5.4.4 but it isn't going as well. I'm getting the error message: Server Error in '/' Application. Object reference not set to an instance of an object. Description: An unhandled exception occurred during the execution of the current web request. Please review the stack trace for more information about the error and where it originated in the code.
